Story Crowned Big 12 Champion in 100 Breast

FORT WORTH – Ford Story earned the title of Big 12 Champion after taking home gold in the 100 breaststroke on Friday night. Story’s time of 53.24 was not only good enough for first place at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship, but it also broke the school record.

“I think it’s pretty special for Ford because he came in second his sophomore year and didn’t have a great meet his junior year,” said head coach Richard Sybesma. “But he came back with a vengeance this year. Since he already earned an NCAA qualifying time in December, it was truly icing on the cake for him to win the Big 12 individual title.”

After day three of the conference championships, the TCU men’s team is in third with 494 points, and the women’s team is in fifth with 278 points.

“I feel like we had a really good day. Overall, I’m pleased with how we are performing.”

Sophomore Carlos Hunnicutt opened the day with a school-record time of 3:39.49 in the the 400 IM. Hunnicutt has broken three school records in three days at the meet. On day one, he was a part of the 800-yard medley relay team that set the school record at 6:33.66. On Thursday, the sophomore broke a 22-year-old school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:47.46. Hunnicutt’s latest two records surpassed TCU All-American Walter Soza on TCU’s all-time list.

Hunnicutt went on to take fifth in the 400 IM finals at 3:54.22. Senior Cameron Rattray (3:56.91) and junior John Remetta (3:58.35) placed six and seventh, respectively.
