WVU Escapes With Win Over TCU
MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — TCU’s Veja Hamilton set a major career milestone, Zahna Medley neared another, but late WVU runs doomed the Horned Frogs in a 83-72 loss to the Mountaineers on Wednesday night at WVU Coliseum.
The Frogs led by as many as 13 points with 3:20 to go in the third quarter before two runs of 9-0 or better in the final 13 minutes of play doomed TCU.
Hamilton had 13 points and seven rebounds in the game. Hamilton’s first rebound of the game in the opening minutes was the 500th of her TCU career as she became the 12th player in program history to reach the 500 career rebound plateau and the sixth player in program history to reach milestones of 900 career points and 500 career rebounds during a TCU career. Medley had 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting and is now within just 17 points of tying the TCU career scoring mark of 1,892 points set by Sandora Irvin.
Hamilton and Medley were two of four TCU players to score in double figures. Alix added 12 points and Butts had 10 for TCU.
The Frogs played a fast-pace in the early going that included a stretch where TCU made five straight field goal attempts to help give TCU an early 15-11 lead that saw Hamilton score six of TCU’s first 15 points. The pace continued as TCU led 22-20 after 10 minutes as the Frogs got seven points off WVU turnovers and led despite allowing the Mountaineers to shoot 8-of-12 in the first quarter, a 66.7 percent clip.
The teams continued to play at an aggressive pace in the second quarter with TCU building a lead of as many as five points at 29-24 off a basket from freshman Jordan Moore. Medley got her 300th career three-point field goal with 6:02 left in the second quarter to go back up 34-32 after WVU had regained the lead at 32-31 on a three.
After WVU built a four-point edge with 2:32 to go in the half, the Frogs responed with baskets from Caitlin Diaz and Jada Butts to tie it up before WVU took a two-point lead into the half on a basket from Bria Holmes.
Both teams shot over 50.0 percent in the opening half with the Frogs gaining a 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Frogs would keep the offensive success going in the third quarter as TCU used a 19-4 run to build a 64-51 lead with 3:20 left in the quarter. The streak included a stretch where the Frogs made nine consecutive field goals.
The Mountaineers then scored nine straight to end the quarter and pull within four at 64-60 in the final 2:30 of the period.
TCU answered with a three by AJ Alix to open the fourth quarter to go up seven at 67-60 before five straight by the Mountaineers got them to within two at 69-67. Bria Holmes hit a three from the corner with 4:38 to go to give WVU the lead for good. WVU scored another basket to go up 72-69 to cap a 10-0 run before TCU cut it to one, the closest they would get the remainder of the game.
TCU’s normal success at the free throw line failed them as they got to the line just six times, converting on five-of-six attempts. WVU got 14 points from the line on 14-of-22 attempts on the game.
The Frogs, who shot 50.8 percent in the game and hit 7-of-14 three-point field goals in the game, got 19 points off 14 WVU turnovers.
