Frogs Break School Record on Day One
FORT WORTHÂ — Day one of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship faired well for TCU as they walked away with a school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Wednesday.
“I feel that we had a solid first day,” said head coach Richard Sybesma. “Both the swimmers and divers had a good showing today, and we look to keep building that momentum through the rest of the week.”
The men’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshmen Tommy Thach, Leo Sanchez, Jack McLaughlin and sophomore Carlos Hunnicuttfinished the race in 6:33.66, breaking the school record by more than a second. The previous record of 6:34.97 was set in 2012 byLaszlo Gyurko, Sebastian Arispe, Josh Mangus and Ryker Saunders.
The women’s 200-yard medley relay team also earned a spot on TCU’s all-time list with the third-fastest time in school history. The relay team consisted of freshman Maddie Ibrahim, sophomore Devin Newton, and freshmen Micaela Roemer and Bryn Lohrberg. The quartet finished in 1:42.25, less than a second off the TCU record (1:41.72) and the third-fastest in school history.
In the men’s 1-meter dive, freshman Andrew Shurtleff finished in fourth-place with a score of 327.30. Freshman Drew Webb also scored for the Horned Frogs, placing sixth at 308.45.
The men’s 200-yard medley relay team of junior Chris Hearl, senior Ford Story, sophomore John Smith and junior Garrett Hills placed third in the event with a time of 1:28.55.
Through six events, the men’s team is in third with 92 points, and the women’s team is in fourth with 58 points.
Action at the Big 12 Championship will resume tomorrow, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. with the 500 free, 200 IM, and the 50 free preliminaries. Finals will begin at 6 p.m.
