FORT WORTH, Texas – Strong singles play on all six courts helped lead the No. 3 TCU men’s tennis team to its 18th straight victory at home under head coach David Roditi with a 7-0 win over No. 61 Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
After winning the doubles point, the Horned Frogs (6-2) took the first sets on all six singles courts over the Mustangs (3-5) and ultimately claimed wins in 12 of the 13 sets played on Saturday.
Trey Daniel picked up his first win in a dual match this season and put TCU up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court five, before No. 122 Alex Rybakov quickly put away Ben Donovan on court one, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Reese Stalder clinched the match and recorded win No. 12 this season, as he downed Tim Tan, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
Opening Statement
“I am really pleased with the way we played, especially in the singles and doubles. I am pleased by the way we figured out a way to come back in some of those doubles matches. I feel like they jumped all over us and Cal Poly is a very high energetic and well-coached team. They were all over us in the beginning and we got down a break on courts one and two and we found a way to get back in those matches and break back. There are definitely some things we need to get better at. We need to get better with our serving and we need to get better with where we hit the serve in doubles, but any time you can win and find ways to come back is great to see as a coach.â€
On the performance in singles
“It was scary when you decide to sit two of your best players in singles and give the chance to some of our other good players that we have that don’t get to compete every time. It is great to see them step up. Trey Daniel did a great job of giving us a quick point and he put a lot of pressure on Cal Poly. Alex (Rybakov) had probably one of the best performances of the day and he killed that guy at No. 1 and that kid can play. That was really good to see. Jerry Lopez had a very mature and professional way of approaching his match.
“We won 12 out of 13 sets in singles and that is a good day for us. We appreciate all of the fans that came out. I know we have a lot of sports events going on and it was great to see the people who came to support us. Thank you to the Kappa Kappa Gamma’s for decorating our locker room and creating a great atmosphere here for the match.â€
