GoFrogs: Barrett Leads TCU After One Round at Colonial

FORT WORTH – The TCU men’s golf team opened play at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational on Sunday with a 10-over 290 at Colonial Country Club. Senior Chelso Barrett led TCU individually with a 2-under 68.
The Frogs sit in 13th place in the 15-team tournament, just three shots out of 12th, four from 10th and five from seventh place. Barrett is in a five-way for ninth place, and two shots off the lead on a congested individual leaderboard.
Round of the Day
Barrett, an honorable mention All-American last season, started his day of the par-4 12th and opened with seven straight pars to close the back nine. The Keene, N.H., native then birdied holes No. 1, 3 and 5, but bogeyed No. 2, before closing with six consecutive pars to card his 2-under 68.
Barrett is in a tie for ninth place, but two shots off the lead, held by two golfers who shot 4-under 66. Six golfers shot a 3-under 67, while Barrett is one of five golfers that shot a 68.
Other Notables
– Barrett has now fired five par or better rounds in his seven rounds this season. The 68 was his third round in the 60s this season and the 22nd of his TCU career.
– Stefano Mazzoli, who won the individual title at TCU’s last tournament, shot an even-par 70 on Sunday and sits in a tied for 16th place. It was also his fifth par or better round in his seven rounds this season.
– TCU is hosting the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational for the second time. The Frogs hosted the inaugural event in 2014 at Colonial Country Club, while the second annual event was played at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland, Ore., in 2015.
– The 2016 Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational field features seven of the nation’s top 10 teams and three of the world’s top five amateurs.
