Daily Oklahoman: Mayfield doesn’t hold targeting hit against Summers

by Ryan Aber

A year ago against TCU, Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t play in the second half after a first-half hit from Horned Frogs linebacker Ty Summers.

“It was tough, knowing you can’t help out your team,” Mayfield said. “We struggled obviously a little bit in the second half last year and let them come back. It was just tough because we didn’t play the way we should have.”

The Sooners hung on to win that game 30-29 after leading 23-7 at halftime.

Mayfield returned the next week against Oklahoma State.

Mayfield said he didn’t hold anything against Summers, who is a sophomore this season.

“Ty’s a good guy,” Mayfield said. “He played with Connor and Trevor Knight in high school. He’s a good friend of theirs. He’s a nice guy but it’s football. Hits are going to happen. Every once in awhile, you take on and it’s going to hurt. I’ve moved on.”
