The Cincinnati Bengals made a bit of a surprise roster move on Sunday, waiving linebacker Paul Dawson while claiming quarterback Jeff Driskel off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers.
Dawson was a third-round pick of the Bengals last year out of TCU. His release is the earliest the Bengals have let a third-round pick go since 2011, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. Dawson, who had 12 tackles in 11 games in 2015, could be brought back to the Bengals practice squad if he clears waivers.
Driskel was a sixth-round round pick of the 49ers out of Louisiana Tech in April. The 49ers waived Driskel on Saturday while choosing to keep Christian Ponder as their third quarterback, but it was believed they hoped to be able to bring Driskel back to their practice squad. Driskel was 15-of-31 for 132 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions in the preseason.
