TCU head football coach Gary Patterson has been around Fort Worth for a long, long time - 16 years, to be exact, and longer than almost every other Division I head coach. But even a decade and a half later, there’s much the TCU fan base doesn’t know about Patterson. Here are 10 things to up your knowledge:

1) He built his legacy on the sidelines, not the field

Patterson has developed a reputation as one of the best coaches in the game, but many don’t know that he saw action at safety and linebacker at Kansas State back in his playing days. While Patterson certainly wasn’t a liability on defense, let’s just say he found his true niche as a coach rather than a player.

2) He’s lost a lot of weight

When Patterson walked into his signing-day press conference, he was slimmer than he had been in fall and he was sporting a cane. Turns out the coach had knee surgery after the Alamo Bowl win, which led to the weight loss.
