The San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions swung a trade on Sunday, with the 49ers trading offensive lineman Brandon Thomas in exchange for wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Thomas (6-3, 317, Clemson) was a third-round draft pick of the 49ers in the 2014 draft. Thomas was sidelined due to a torn ACL as a rookie, then did not appear in a regular season game in 2015. He figured to be on the outside looking in when the 49ers made roster cuts in the coming days.
Kerley (5-9, 188, TCU) was a fifth-round draft pick of the New York Jets in 2011. He caught 182 passes for 2,225 yards and nine touchdowns with the Jets in five seasons before they released him in March (The Lions signed him later that month). Kerley also has extensive experience as a punt returner, with 134 returns for 1,250 yards and one touchdown.
