GoFrogs: Notes on a scorecard

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION RESTRUCTURING
As I’m sure you saw Tuesday, we’ve announced a reorganization of our athletics administrative staff. The impetus was to better serve our student-athletes and coaches. Please CLICK HERE for the full release.

KEY CREDIT CARD NOTE
As a heads-up when coming to Amon G. Carter Stadium this fall, we’ve been informed through our credit card processor that it has upgraded software will now require us to utilize the chip-reading process associated with EMV chip-enabled credit cards (inserting them into the bottom of the reader instead of swiping the magnetic strip).

This process keeps TCU compliant with the latest PCI regulations and significantly reduces our liability. The implementation of this process was a TCU decision consistent with industry best practices.

The new chip reading process does, however, add several seconds to each transaction and there will be a learning curve for our customers. Sodexo will be changing its employee/volunteer training to reflect the new practice and will design the best process to lower wait time. We very much appreciate your understanding.

COLLEGE COLORS DAY
Please mark your calendar for Friday, Sept. 2, when we celebrate the 12th-Annual College Colors Day! Horned Frogs fans are encouraged to show their support for TCU across the social media landscape. Starting Monday, Aug. 22, on Facebook, fans can add a custom TCU frame to their profile picture. Also, sharing imagery and video in purple and white across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram while using #CollegeColors could find fans in some brand new gear!

MEET THE FROGS

As a reminder, our annual and very popular Meet The Frogs is Saturday, Aug. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. Our football student-athletes and head coach Gary Patterson will be available for autographs and pictures in the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility. As a heads-up and consistent with past years, the only item that will be signed is the team poster provided at the event.

IN THE COMMUNITY
Longtime TCU swimming and diving coach Richard Sybesma has seemingly taught half the city of Fort Worth to swim, and that number keeps growing. Thanks to the support of the Rainwater Charitable Foundation, 500 children learned to swim this summer at no cost under the administration of Coach Sybesma at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

This is the fourth year the Rainwater Charitable Foundation has funded the free lessons for area youth. We’re proud of Coach Sybesma playing such an active part in our community.

HONOR ROLL

Congratulations to Kirk Saarloos on being named National Assistant Coach of the Year by D1Baseball.com! Kirk has done a phenomenal job with our pitching staff and as our recruiting coordinator.

FACILITIES UPDATE

Our men’s and women’s basketball coaching staffs have moved into their new offices in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Basketball Complex. Work is also continuing at a great pace on the football office renovation project in the John Justin Athletic Center.

SOCCER AND VOLLEYBALL SEASON TICKETS AVAILABLE

While football season tickets are sold out, we do have soccer and volleyball season tickets available. Soccer season tickets for 10 home matches are just $35 for adults and $25 for youth. Volleyball season tickets are $75 for adults and $50 for youth. Single-game tickets are also available. Just call (817) 257-FROG.

IT’S HERE!

Our 2016-17 athletics season officially commences Friday night in College Park, Md., when our soccer program faces Maryland. Best wishes to head coach Eric Bell, his staff and our student-athletes! Our road trip to the D.C. area continues Sunday afternoon with a contest at Navy.

OUR APOLOGIES

No matter how many eyes you put on something, you’re sometimes bound to still miss it. We apologize for an unfortunate mistake on page 32 of our Fan Guide that many of you recently received with your football season tickets. We do know that Dennis Franchione was the head coach of our 1998 Sun Bowl championship team and will have that correctly stated in next year’s edition.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE

Last Edition’s Answer: It was “Shawshank Redemption” when Andy Dufresne said to Red, “I could use a good man to help me get my project on wheels. I’ll keep an eye out for you and the chessboard ready.”

This Week’s Question: “They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs.”

COMPLIANCE CORNER

Ocean State University (OSU) will begin classes for the Fall 2016 term next week. Which of the following is true?

A. Student-athletes may practice but not compete during OSU’s first five days of classes while not enrolled full-time.
B. Student-athletes will have to stop participating in practice on the first day of class if not enrolled full-time.
C. Student-athletes may practice and compete during OSU’s first five days of classes while not enrolled full-time.
D. Student-athletes must be dropped from the team if not enrolled full-time by the first day of class.

The answer is A. NCAA Bylaw 14.2.1.5 states that a student-athlete may practice, but may not compete, during the institution’s first five days of classes if the student-athlete is enrolled in less than a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student is otherwise eligible under all institutional, conference and NCAA requirements. (Adopted: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95)
