GoFrogs: TCU Places Three on Campbell Watch List
TYLER, Texas — TCU wide receivers Deanté Gray and KaVontae Turpin as well as running back Kyle Hicks have been named to the watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
TCU’s three selections are tied for the most in the nation.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented to a player who was either born in Texas, graduated from a state high school or plays at a Texas-based University. Former TCU quarterback and now Seattle Seahawk Trevone Boykin was the 2014 recipient.
Gray was sidelined by injury for the entire 2015 season. The Houston native was one of TCU’s big-play weapons in 2014 with 36 receptions for 582 yards and eight touchdowns. He is the fastest player on the Horned Frogs with a 4.36 time in the 40.
Gray earned his TCU degree in May 2016 and will play this fall as a graduate student.
Turpin was a Freshman All-American and All-Big 12 recipient last year. He set TCU freshman records with his 45 receptions for 649 yards and eight touchdowns, which tied for second nationally among rookies.
The Monroe, La., native set a Big 12 freshman record with four touchdown catches against Texas, a mark that tied for the top spot in the nation by an FBS player last season. He was the only player in the country in 2015 to rank in the top 25 in kickoff returns (27.0 average) and punt returns (10.6 average). He averaged 15.3 yards each time he touched the ball.
Gray and Turpin were also selected to the Maxwell Award Watch List. Additionally, Turpin is on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team as a return specialist and the Hornung Award Watch List.
Hicks also appears on the Doak Walker Award Watch List. The junior from Arlington, Texas, placed third on TCU last season with 262 yards rushing on a 4.8 per carry mark with three touchdowns. He was the Horned Frogs’ second-leading receiver out of the backfield with 13 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Hicks posted career-high totals of 53 yards rushing and four receptions in the 28-21 double-overtime victory over Baylor.
