Last year, KaVontae Turpin took TCU by storm with his electrifying returns and routes. Turpin, now a sophomore, will no longer fly under the radar — he’s now a major part of the TCU offense.

But it seems that every year, somebody on the TCU roster steps up and surprises people. Here are the five players we think are most likely to have a breakout year.

  1. Jaelan Austin — The sophomore wide receiver had his best game of his freshman year in his biggest game. Against Oregon, Austin had four catches for 67 yards, including a leaping touchdown that helped spark TCU’s comeback win. Now, Austin is expected to take on a starting role after the departure of Josh Doctson. He’s listed on the preseason depth chart as the No. 1 receiver on the edge, across the field from the smaller Deanté Gray. At 6’2″, Austin’s length gives him a weapon that most other receivers on TCU’s roster simply don’t have. Look for Austin to be a major player on deep throws and goal line jump balls.
