Houston Chronicle: Big 12’s about-face on expansion motivated by ACC’s TV deal

DALLAS – In a jarring reversal even for a conference known for its wildly fluctuating direction, the Big 12 board of directors on Tuesday authorized commissioner Bob Bowlsby to contact potential new members and explore the possibility of expansion.
Bowlsby and Oklahoma president David Boren, the chairman of the league’s board, made the announcement after Big 12 presidents and chancellors met behind closed doors for several hours.
As recently as last month, conference officials had indicated serious discussions to expand the 10-member league were all but dead.
But Tuesday, Boren and Bowlsby offered a different outlook, revealing that the 20 chancellors and presidents voted unanimously to move forward. And Boren said it’s possible the Big 12 could add either two or four members.
