GoFrogs: Howard on Butkus Award Watch List

CHICAGO — TCU’s Travin Howard appears on the watch list for the Butkus Award, presented to the nation’s top linebacker.

Howard, who began last season as a back-up safety before being moved to linebacker, was honorable-mention All-Big 12 and the 2016 Valero Alamo Bowl Defensive Most Valuable Player. He led the Horned Frogs with 105 tackles, including eight for loss, with three forced fumbles, a sack and interception. He recorded a career-high 19 tackles, fourth-most in a game under head coach Gary Patterson, in a win over Baylor.

Howard also appears on watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy, both presented to the top defensive player in the country.

TCU returns seven defensive starters from the close of last season as well as four additional starters who suffered season-ending injuries a year ago.

The Horned Frogs begin camp Aug. 3. The season opener is Sept. 3 versus South Dakota State at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
