DMN: Wheelchair-bound former TCU football player: Ali was ‘the most amazing and Godly man I ever met’

Over the last 42 years in a wheelchair, Kent Waldrep has encountered a lot of luminaries while covering the map searching for a cure to spinal cord paralysis. Every president since Gerald Ford, for starters.

Even so, a six-city tour in the fall of 1997 probably merits its own category.

From Dallas to Houston, Austin, Kansas City, Detroit and Washington D.C., Waldrep spent the better part of a month with Muhammad Ali.

They’d met in 1994 when Ali came to town to serve as honorary co-chair of Fight Night, benefiting Waldrep’s National Paralysis Foundation. When Waldrep, injured in a 1974 college football game, asked Ali if he felt like a road trip, the champ didn’t think twice.
