MiLB: Preston Morrison adds seven to scoreless streak

By Tyler Maun / MiLB.com

Preston Morrison’s start to the season was a case of mistaken identity. As the summer heats up, the right-hander feels at home on the mound, and Midwest League hitters are paying the price.

The Cubs prospect extended his scoreless streak to 28 1/3 innings with seven spotless frames on Wednesday, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out nine, as Class A South Bend thumped Fort Wayne, 12-2.

“It feels really nice to honestly feel like myself,” Morrison said after his fifth straight win. “I think the most important thing for me is just being myself, dictating the pace, the tempo, not letting hitters settle in, and going after guys with good, quality pitches, not trying to be too perfect. I’d rather throw 80 good pitches than 20 perfect pitches. Every time I toe the rubber, I’m just trying to throw as many quality pitches as I can.”

Morrison (9-3) hasn’t allowed a run since surrendering three against Bowling Green on June 10, which also was the first win in his current streak. Fort Wayne hardly came close to threatening the shutout stretch, pushing only two men to second base and going 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
