GoFrogs: Schlossnagle Named National Coach of the Year
FORT WORTH – TCU baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle has been named the Baseball America National Coach of the Year. The Horned Frogs are the only team in the nation to have appeared in three straight College World Series.
Schlossnagle was previously named the NCBWA National Coach of the Year in 2010 after guiding TCU to its first-ever berth in the College World Series.
The 2016 season produced the third-most wins in program history as Schlossnagle guided his group to a 49-18 record and a unanimous No. 3 national ranking to end the season. Along the way, the Horned Frogs finished third in the Big 12 regular-season standings, won the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, hosted and swept through the NCAA Fort Worth Regional and clinched a return trip to Omaha with a NCAA Super Regional series victory in College Station over the No. 4 national seed Texas A&M.
All those accomplishments were done with a team full of new players. At the conclusion of the 2015 season, TCU said goodbye to eight seniors and two underclassmen who went on to begin their professional careers. The Horned Frogs had to replace five everyday field starters, the entire starting rotation, their long relief pitcher and a closer. Aided by the nation’s No. 7-ranked recruiting class, Schlossnagle and his staff filled in the holes and continued the program’s winning tradition.
The Horned Frogs raced out to a 17-3 record, which included being named the champions of the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children College Classic played at Minute Maid Park in Houston. TCU weathered a midseason slump and saved its best baseball for the final month of the regular season. TCU closed out the regular season with a five-game winning streak. A 4-1 trek through the Big 12 Championships produced TCU’s eighth conference tournament championship.
For the third straight season, the Road To Omaha began at Lupton Stadium as the Frogs were tabbed 1 of 16 host sites, becoming 1 of just 7 teams nationally to host each of the last three NCAA Regionals.
Not intimidated by the big stage in College Station, the Horned Frogs dispatched the Aggies, a team that had spent the entire season ranked in the top 10, in three games to clinch a third straight trip to Omaha. It’s the second time under Schlossnagle’s tutelage that the Horned Frogs advanced by winning a road Super Regional, having done so in 2010 at No. 2 national seed Texas.
TCU’s fourth trip to Omaha didn’t result in a national championship, but the future of the program looks bright as it will lose just two players to graduation and two underclassmen to the draft.
The year 2016 produced yet another All-American in Luken Baker, who was also tabbed the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, and four freshmen All-Americans. Ten Horned Frogs were named all-conference as well.
Schlossnagle, TCU’s all-time winningest baseball coach, will begin his 14th season as head coach in 2017 with a TCU record of 565-254 and a career record of 642-301.
