
Today’s U: Jamie Dixon makes recruiting inroads at TCU
The July evaluation period in college basketball starts Wednesday and runs through July 24.
The NCAA “evaluation period†means that thousands of players on hundreds of summer teams compete in events around the country while coaches and their assistants, wearing school logo polos, stand or sit and watch meaningless contests in dozens of cities. For some coaches, it’s evaluating talent; for others, it’s showing up and showing love to high school stars who have verbally committed.
Jamie Dixon knows about the dog-and-pony-show aspect of July. The new TCU coach has spent the last four months hiring a staff and catching up on recruiting while working out of temporary offices during renovations at the school’s practice facility. Dixon’s players are attending summer school and summer workouts; TCU has staged the usual “kid camps.â€
Dixon recently threw out the first pitch at a Texas Rangers game (it was a low throw, but he made it from the mound). He went to Omaha to support the baseball team in the College World Series. Last week his family completed the move from Pittsburgh after his children finished school.
“It’s constant,†Dixon said of the pace. “It doesn’t stop. We’ve got to keep going and keep growing.â€
