The Exponent Telegram: Coaching talent in Big 12 only adds to conference’s toughnessÂ

MORGANTOWN — It is not exactly the prime time to be looking into basketball season, but Wednesday was the day the Big 12 had its summer conference call.
If anything, the Big 12 is taking on a new look after having probably been the best in college basketball for some time, as over the past few years a few big-time coaches joined along with the Mountaineers’ Bob Huggins.
Shaka Smart came on last year at Texas, while this year Jamie Dixon and Brad Underwood bring a decided Huggins’ look to the coaching fraternity, Huggins having had classic battles with Dixon in the Backyard Brawl against Pitt and Underwood having been a Huggins’ assistant in the year he was at Kansas State before coming to WVU.
At the same time, Chris Beard was hired as Texas Tech’s new coach less than a month after having been hired for the same job at UNLV.
