GoFrogs: Opportunistic Horned Frogs Win 6-1

OMAHA, Neb. — The TCU Horned Frogs took control of bracket two at the College World Series with a 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina Tuesday night. The Frogs took advantage of a pair of Chanticleer errors to score three unearned runs en route to improving to 2-0 in the College World Series.

The Rundown
The pitching duo of Brian Howard and Ryan Burnett turned in a dominating performance in helping TCU stay in the winner’s bracket. Howard improved to 10-2 on the season after allowing just one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. He struck out seven and walked three.

Burnett was the story of the game as he entered with two out in the sixth and retired all 10 batters he faced, picking up his first save of the season. The red-shirt junior struck out two in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Luken Baker got the scoring started with a lead-off, solo home run in the second inning. The home run was his 11th of the season and his second in the College World Series.

Howard worked around a trio of lead-off base runners in each of the first three innings. He was helped along by Evan Skoug, who cut down a pair of runners trying to steal second. None was bigger than the third inning when the Chanticleers had runners on the corners with two outs. Skoug cut down the runner trying to steal second to end the inning with TCU’s 1-0 lead in tact.

TCU broke the game open in the fifth with a pair of runs on one hit and one costly Coastal Carolina error. A potential double play ball went awry as the ball was thrown into right field. Austen Wade drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the second run of the game. Cam Warner beat out another potential double play ball to make it a 3-0 game.

Another run crossed the plate for the Frogs in the sixth as the lead grew to four. Baker opened the inning with his third hit of the game. He eventually scored on a double play ball hit by Dane Steinhagen.

Coastal Carolina picked up its only run of the game in the sixth. Michael Paez led off the frame with a double and scored on a base hit from G.K. Young. A two-out walk issued to Billy Cooke was the last base runner of the night for Coastal.

TCU added two more runs in the ninth to account for the final score. Michael Landestoy tripled home Ryan Merrill and came around to score on the Chanticleers’ second error of the night.
