Today’s U: Pitching a difference-maker for Big 12’s three CWS teams

When the College World Series moved to TD Ameritrade Park in 2011, pitching became a premium. The stadium is a pitcher’s park with dimensions of 335 feet down the lines, 375 to the alleys and 408 feet to center field.

If the guys toeing the rubber are important to deciding the 2016 CWS, then the three Big 12 teams are threats to make a run to the championship series. Texas Tech, TCU and Oklahoma State were dominant in winning their super regionals.

How dominant? The three teams went 6-1 and in those six victories Big 12 pitchers allowed a total of six runs, two extra base hits, struck out 44 and walked 13. And, oh by the way … opposing hitters compiled a batting average of .080.

TCU has reached the CWS for the third consecutive season. The previous two trips happened when the Frogs won super regionals in Fort Worth. This year, TCU had to win at Texas A&M and slow an Aggies’ attack that was 11th nationally in hitting at .318 and tied for 13th in run production.

In winning twice on the road, TCU pitchers allowed eight hits and three runs in the two victories.

“Texas A&M has an explosive offense and this isn’t one of TCU’s better pitching staffs,” said Aaron Fitt, editor and national writer for D1baseball.com. “What they did to win the super regional was impressive.” …
