Houston Chronicle: Legendary “Granger Ghost” Gil Bartosh, former Frog, dies

By David Barron

Gil Bartosh, nicknamed the “Granger Ghost” for his exploits as a high school football player and later a high school and college coach, has died at 86.

Bartosh led Granger to a Class B regional championship in 1947 and received his nickname for his performance during a fog-shrouded game against Rockdale.

He played at TCU and coached at Milby and Lee high schools in Houston, was an assistant coach at Rice University and spent three seasons as head coach at Odessa Permian, leading the Panthers to the 1972 Class 4A state championship. He later was head coach at Texas-El Paso and Midland Lee and an assistant at Texas A&M and New Mexico.

Bartosh, who lived in Liberty Hill, was a member of the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame and the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Georgetown, with burial in Granger. Survivors include his wife, a son, five daughters, a brother, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
