FORT WORTH – Brian Howard retired the final 17 batters he faced and TCU cruised to an 8-1 win over Arizona State in the NCAA Fort Worth Regional championship game on Sunday night at Lupton Stadium.

The Horned Frogs scored three runs in the second inning to jump ahead, broke the game open with four in the eighth inning while Howard tossed 8.0 innings of one-run baseball, advancing the Horned Frogs to their sixth NCAA Super Regional in the last eight seasons.

The Rundown
Josh Watson drew a leadoff walk in the second inning for TCU (45-15) and moved to third base on Dane Steinhagen’s bloop double down the right field line. He then came home on Austen Wade’s sacrifice fly.

Regional MVP Cam Warner then hit TCU’s second bloop double of the inning as he placed a ball between the ASU second baseman and right fielder to score Steinahgen and give the Frogs a 2-0 lead.

Evan Skoug then hit a chopper over Eder Erives’ head on the pound and beat it out for an infield single to score Connor Wanhanen who had walked earlier in the inning.

Howard allowed a run to cross in the third inning on David Greer’s RBI single, but that was the final hit the junior would allow on the night as he retired 17 straight batters before being lifted after the eighth inning.

In all, Howard (8-2) tossed 8.0 innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out a career-high-tying nine batters with no walks.

Arizona State (36-23) starter Eder Erives (6-2) was charged with the loss after going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, the last one coming on an RBI double from Josh Watson in the seventh inning.

TCU added insurance in the eighth inning with four runs as the Horned Frogs sent 10 batters to the plate against the ASU bullpen. The big blow was Warner’s two-run home run, which came on the heels of an RBI single from Wade and ahead of an RBI single from Elliott Barzilli.

Brian Trieglaff tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game for TCU.

Warner finished the night 2-for-6 with three RBI and the two extra base hits. He finished the regional 5-for-16 with six RBI in his MVP effort.

Stats of the Game
4 — TCU’s 3-0 weekend gave the Horned Frogs the fourth NCAA Regional sweep in program history (2009, 2010, 2014), with all four coming at Lupton Stadium.

5 — TCU had five straight two-out hits in its four-run eighth inning.
