The Big 12 Championship Game returns in 2017. That’s good news for a conference that needs every big stage it can find.
But it comes at a cost. A title game in a 10-team league is going to be clunky. There is no getting around it.
There is no good way to produce two title teams from a 10-team league.
Divisions? Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said the Big 12 “in all likelihood†would split into five-team divisions. But the only way five-team divisions work, and barely at that, is without a round-robin schedule. Playing a nine-game, round-robin schedule, then splitting into divisions would be absurd. …
