Arizona Republic: ASU baseball ousted from NCAA regional by TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas — Tracy Smith knows what the expectations are at a program like Arizona State.
He knows some fans will be disappointed in a 36-23 (16-14 in Pac-12 play) record and not advancing to a super regional, as ASU’s 2016 season came to an end in a 8-1 loss against TCU on Sunday night in the TCU Regional championship game.
But with that considered, he didn’t expect this good of a season from this group of Sun Devils.
“The way we started, we viewed it as a little bit of a transition year,†Smith said. “We lost a lot of guys from last year and got smacked with injuries pretty heavily, particularly on the mound. There was a low point in our season when it looked like it could go in one of two directions.
“I will think about this team a lot and for me in 20-plus years of coaching, I got as much out of them as a team as any. They came together when it very easily could have gone south. …
