GoFrogs: M. Golf in First at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Oregon – The TCU men’s golf team surged late in its first round at the NCAA Championships, posting a 2-over 282 to end the tournament’s first day in a tie for first place at the Eugene Country Club.

The Horned Frogs 282 is the second lowest NCAA Championships first round score in program history, just one shot shy of the 281 posted by TCU’s 2004 team. The round of 282 is also tied for the third lowest round this season by the Frogs.

TCU’s 2-over 282 puts the Frogs in a tie with Arkansas for first place, one shot ahead San Diego State, Southern California and Vanderbilt.

Chelso Barrett led the Frogs with a 2-under 69 thanks in large part to three birdies on his first nine as the Frogs teed off from No. 10 on Friday morning. The junior sits in a tie for fourth place individually in the 30-team, 156-player field.

Paul Barjon is just one shot off his teammates’ pace with a 1-under 69 that has him in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings. The Frogs’ senior leader bogeyed his first three holes, but responded with three birdies on the front nine, including on his final two holes, to bounce back.

Freshman Pierre Mazier also played 3-under on the front nine to rebound from a tough back nine to start the day. Ryan Books shot a 4-over 74 and Giulio Castagnara recorded a 6-over 76 to round out the TCU lineup.

The Frogs tee off at 4:10 p.m. CT on Saturday when they begin their second round on No. 1 with Houston and Louisville.

After Sunday’s third round, the field will be cut to 15 teams before Monday’s final round of stroke play. The field will then be cut again to eight teams for match play, which will begin on Tuesday.
