GoFrogs: Elite 8 Awaits Norrie

FORT WORTH, Texas – Another battle was in store for All-American and No. 5 Cameron Norrie as he upended No. 47 Dominic Cotrone of USF, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, on Friday in the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championship Round of 16 to move into the Elite 8 for the second straight season.

With his 27th victory of the season and eighth straight, Norrie becomes the first person in program history to make back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals of the singles championship.

After starting the match down a break, Norrie fought back to win three of the next four games to take a 3-2 lead in the first set. Norrie and Cotrone continued to hold serve until a late break gave the sophomore the 6-4 win in the opening set. Each player would each hold serve through the first four games to open the second set, until a break gave Cotrone the momentum to win four straight games and take the set, 6-2.

Going into the decisive third set for the second straight day, Norrie had an uphill battle as Cotrone broke and then held to go up 2-0. Norrie did not falter and won six straight games and used his forehand to seal the winner on deuce point to break Cotrone for the fifth time in the match to clinch the 6-2 victory in the final set.

Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“Great comeback for Cameron (Norrie) to win this match. Dominic Cotrone had a lot of momentum at the start of the third set and Cameron was able to dig deep and find a way. Cameron is a competitor and that’s what gave him a chance to win that match.

“(Assistant Coach) Devin (Bowen) and I enjoyed coaching versus a great friend and TCU alumni, (assistant USF coach) Ashley Fisher. It was fun to see Horned Frogs around the country and the world doing a great job with their own passion. Tomorrow will be another battle for Cameron and he will get what he needs to get from this match and be ready to compete again.”
