GoFrogs: Baker, McGuigan Punch Tickets to Eugene

Results

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The TCU men’s track and field team punched two tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon with solid performances by freshman Fellan McGuigan and senior Ronnie Baker at the NCAA West Prelim on Friday.

After being delayed after his first attempt in the hammer throw yesterday, McGuigan, a native of London, England, was geared up for the competition as he kicked off the action for the Horned Frogs on Friday morning. McGuigan earned his way to nationals on his final attempt as he went the distance for 206 feet 9 inches (63.03 meters), placing 11th. The top 12 athletes in the region advanced to the next round.

Due to inclement weather, all of Thursday’s running events were changed to quarterfinals, as apposed to the original schedule of a first round event prior to the quarterfinals.

Baker, a Bowerman Watch List selection, continued to excel during his senior year with a first-place finish in the sixth heat of the 100-meter dash. Baker led the pack and eased through the finish line with a time of 10.22. With his qualifying performance, Baker has now notched a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the fourth-straight year.

In the women’s hammer throw, junior Paola Miranda broke the school record on her second attempt before improving her personal best and program record again on her final attempt with a mark of 199 feet 6 inches (60.81 meters). Miranda was edged out of the top 12 by just two inches.

The men’s discus was postponed due to lightning delays, so junior Adam Damadzic will start things off for TCU at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Frogs’ schedule for the final day of the NCAA West Prelim will feature the following:

9 a.m. | Discus | Adam Damadzic
9 a.m. | Triple Jump | Scotty Newton
9:30 a.m. | Shot Put | Megan Smith
10 a.m. | Women’s 4×100 Relay
10:15 a.m. | Men’s 4×100 Relay
11:30 a.m. | 100 Hurdles | Brianna McGhee
12:55 p.m. | 200 Meters | Sam Watts
