GoFrogs: TCU Set for NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Oregon — For the sixth time in the last eight years, and 19th time since 1980, the TCU men’s golf team will participate in the NCAA Championships when it tees off on Friday at 10:50 a.m. CT with Houston and Louisville.

The championship will be contested at the par-70, 7,014-yard Eugene Country Club. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com. All 30 teams and six individuals will complete three rounds of stroke play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After Sunday’s round, a cut will be made. The top 15 teams, along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team, will play one additional round of stroke play on Monday. After that round, the top eight teams will advance to match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion will be crowned.

The Golf Channel will have live coverage of the tournament beginning with Monday’s final round of stroke play. The Horned Frogs placed 10th last season at the NCAA Championships contested at The Concession Club in Florida.

“The guys all seem to be playing well,” TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. “They have worked hard all year for this opportunity. The golf course in in great shape with lots of beautiful trees lining the fairway. The key is going to be staying patient and playing smart.”

TCU enters the championships after finishing second at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional two weeks ago. TCU’s Paul Barjon and Ryan Books tied for third at three-over par, while Giulio Castagnara tied for 22nd at 13-over par.

With his third-place finish in Albuquerque, Barjon has seven top-10 finishes in 2015-16. He also has two wins (The Connecticut Cup, Middlesburg Bank). In his last six tournaments, he as finished no lower than fifth in five of them, and in his last three he has finished third or better. Prior to the NCAA Regional he finished second at the Big 12 Championships and third at the El Macero Classic.

Books’ highest finish of the season was a tie for 13th prior to winning the El Macero Classic in Mid-April. He placed in a tie for 33rd at the Big 12 Championships before finishing in a tie for third with Barjon in Albuquerque.

Barjon currently leads the team in stroke average at 71.95, followed by NCAA participant Chelso Barrett (73.71). Castagnara, Books andPierre Mazier, who will also participate in Eugene, are scoring at 74.21, 74.28 and 74.96, respectively.

Castagnara has a second-place finish under his belt at the Redhawk Intercollegiate, while Mazier’s best finish of the season is a tie for 13th, which he has done twice.
