DMN: TCU’s top rivalries feature four in-state foes and a historic bowl opponent

  1. SMU Mustangs. In recent times this is not the prime date on TCU’s calendar that it once was with SMU wading through mediocrity while the Horned Frogs established themselves as a national power. But historically, this is the one that every TCU alum cares about. The team’s first met in 1915 and then in 1946 the famed Iron Skillet was introduced as the prize for the winner of the annual matchup after a TCU fan caught SMU fans frying frog legs during a tailgate. The teams have played 95 times with TCU leading the series between old Southwest Conference foes 48-40-7. The game never meant as much as it did in 1935, when the teams played with a spot in the Rose Bowl on the line, which SMU won 20-14.

Baylor Bears. This one took a bit of a hit after Gary Patterson’s foilArt Briles was fired on Thursday — those two did not like each other very much — but Baylor is actually one of the oldest rivalries in all of college football. It dates all the way back to the 19th century — 1899 to be precise. It is a remarkably even matchup, too, with the teams tied over the past 116 years at 52-52-7. But it was not until recent years that the annual game took on a more significant meaning with the two teams battling with major bowl or playoff consequences on the line.
