GoFrogs: Notes on a Scorecard

TWO MORE BIG 12 CHAMPIONS!
What a great meet last weekend at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex! We were honored to host the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with over 2,300 people in attendance Sunday. Highlighting the weekend for us was two-time national champion Ronnie Baker and Brianna McGhee adding to their already impressive list of hardware by winning Big 12 gold! Ronnie captured the 100 meters in 10.15 seconds, while Brianna set another school record en route to winning the 100 hurdles. She clocked an impressive 12.88, the sixth-fastest time in the NCAA, in Saturday’s prelims.

TICKET UPDATE

New sales begin June 6 for those folks on our football season ticket waiting list. If that includes you, check your email for more info around June 1.

TOUCHDOWN CLUB SOLD OUT
Last week, we offered our Champions Club wait list patrons and Frog Club members the first opportunity to request access to our newest premium hospitality offering on football game days: The Touchdown Club, located in the Stuart Family Courtside Club. I am thrilled to announce that we sold out of these season access passes in a few short days. If you purchased passes, thank you for your support! If you did not, but are interested in passes for the future, please contact the TCU Frog Club at (817) 257-7700 to be added to the wait list.

RETIREMENT LOOMING
Over his nearly 42 years with TCU Athletics, assistant athletics director for business and finance Tommy Love has crossed paths with many of you. His first 26 years were in our ticket office. He then moved to our business office and has done a phenomenal job! He actually makes budget meetings fun! Tommy will be retiring next week. His last official day will be Friday, May 27. We can’t thank Tommy enough for what he’s meant to everyone in the Horned Frogs Family and wish him and his lovely bride, Donna, the absolute best in retirement!

THANK YOU SCOTT!

We wish TCU senior associate athletics director for external operations Scott Kull the absolute best as he departs us after 11 great years for a deputy athletics director position at USF. Scott was instrumental in growing the TCU brand and helping us achieve record levels for season-ticket sales and revenue. Upon his arrival in 2005, Scott completely transformed our marketing department and licensing program. He was also the point person in negotiating our contracts with IMG as well as FOX, our third-tier television rights holder. Scott is a great friend who will do well in Tampa. He is a tremendous leader with an incredible passion for collegiate athletics. It’s been an absolute honor to work with him. I will also miss our many conversations on 1980s movie trivia.

MONCRIEF CLUB PROJECT

As you know, there’s always some type of construction project taking place. The latest is in the Moncrief Club, located in the south end zone of Amon G. Carter Stadium. We’re currently converting it for use as a training table for our student-athletes. If you’re in the facility for home football games, everything will be completed by our Sept. 3 season opener.

AUSTIN BOUND
For Horned Frogs in the Austin area, I look forward to hopefully seeing you Thursday night when I head to our Coaches Event at the Rattle Inn Rooftop with Gary Patterson (football), Jamie Dixon (men’s basketball), Eric Bell (soccer), Jill Kramer (indoor volleyball) andErik Peterson (beach volleyball).

SWEET 16!
Congratulations to our Big 12 champion men’s tennis program on reaching the Sweet 16 for the NCAA Championships! We posted back-to-back 4-0 victories over Jackson State and LSU at the Fort Worth Regional last weekend at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. We’ll face California Friday at 9 a.m. in Tulsa with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight. As you know, we made the Final Four last year.

AWARDS TIME

We received a great honor Tuesday with our recognition as the “2015 Local Marketing Program of the Year” at the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) Seminar in Atlanta. Kudos to assistant athletics director for marketing and licensing Drew Martin and Deanna Damon from our marketing/media relations office for their efforts in leading this program for us!

The award was in recognition of our joint TCU-MLB merchandise program. Drew and Deanna worked with the Major League Baseball Players Association to create a co-branded TCU jersey t-shirt with our former players’ names on the back. The merchandise was carried by multiple retailers and involved coordination across a variety of organizations, including the MLBPA and former players who were involved in endorsing the program, engaging fans on social media and then surprising some of them with gift boxes of autographed items and TCU-branded merchandise.

ON THE DOCKET

Our final regular-season home baseball series is this weekend as we host Kansas State. Please note the series will begin a day earlier than normal on Thursday. First pitch that night is 6:30. We also have a 6:30 p.m. start Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s golf is completing play Wednesday at its NCAA Regional in Albuquerque. We concluded Tuesday’s second round in second place and need a top-five finish to advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Oregon.

RADIO SHOW TONIGHT
Please mark your calendar for tonight at 6 p.m. as the Jim Schlossnagle Radio Show will take place at The Woodshed. Join our head baseball coach and student-athletes while enjoying half-price appetizers. You can listen on KTCU 88.7 FM.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE

Last Week’s Answer: We went to The Fugitive, the classic Harrison Ford movie from 1993, for, “What is this – a trench coat convention?”

This Week’s Question: My friend TCU Doug Strout from Montgomery, Ala., submits the following line, “Fish must get awfully tired of seafood.”

COMPLIANCE CORNER

The Ocean State University (OSU) men’s tennis team is hosting first and second round competition for the NCAA Championships this weekend. Because the team is playing at home, are the OSU student-athletes permitted to receive the $30/day incidental expenses?

Yes. NCAA Staff Interpretation – 5/22/15 – Championships and Postseason Bowl Games Conducted in Locale of Participating Institution (I) – states that an institution participating in an NCAA championship or national governing body championship in an emerging sport conducted in the locale of the institution may provide $30 per day to each member of the squad to cover unitemized incidental expenses during a period not to exceed the maximum number of days of per diem allowed for the involved championship as established by the applicable sport committee. In football, an institution participating in a postseason bowl game conducted in the locale of the institution may provide $30 per day to each member of the squad for a period not to exceed 10 days, beginning not earlier than the day that the institution’s football team begins official practice for the bowl game.
