TCU, Books in 2nd at Albuquerque Regional
Top 5 Teams Advance to NCAA Championships
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After shooting a second-round 17-over par, the TCU men’s golf team jumped four spots and sits alone in second place heading into Wednesday’s final round of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional contested at the par-72, 7,555-yard UNM Championship Course.
The top five teams from each of the nation’s six regional sites will advance to compete at the NCAA Championship that will be held May 27 through June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. In addition to those teams, the top individual finisher not on one of the advancing squads will also earn a bid to compete at nationals.
TCU (+21) is 15 shots back of leader Arizona State (+6), but the Horned Frogs hold a three-shot lead over third-place South Florida, and a five- and six-shot lead over USC and Texas A&M, respectively.
TCU senior Ryan Books, who entered the day tied for third, moved up one spot and is now in a tie for second after shooting a 2-over par 74. He currently sits at even par with USC’s Sean Crocker. Arizona State’s Jon Rahm leads the tournament at 4-under par.
Books made the turn at 1-under par on the day, and after four bogeys on the back recovered with a birdie and a par to enter the clubhouse at 2-over for the day and even for the tournament.
TCU senior Paul Barjon shot up the leaderboard after carding a 4-over par 76. He was tied for 16th heading into Tuesday’s play and he’s now tied for ninth with two other players. Barjon had three birdies on the day, including two on the back nine where he finished 1-over par.
Behind Books and Barjon, Pierre Mazier jumped 32 spots and into a tie for 28th after shooting a second-round 3-over par, while Giulio Castagnara (76-80) and Chelso Barrett (73-84) are tied for 41st and tied for 48th, respectively.
