GoFrogs: TCU Crowns Two Big 12 Champions
FORT WORTH — Seniors Ronnie Baker and Brianna McGhee were crowned Big 12 Champions on the final day of the outdoor conference meet in Fort Worth on Sunday.
Baker, who took home gold at the indoor Big 12 and NCAA championships this year, clocked in with the fastest time in the 100 meter finals, but this time he was able to showcase his talents in front of the home crowd to cap the final Big 12 meet of his career. The two-time national champion crossed the finish line in 10.15 seconds – a tenth of a second faster than Oklahoma State’s John Teeters, who placed second.
With his latest performance, Baker has now garnered four gold medals throughout his career at the Big 12 Championships.
Also topping the charts was the Omaha, Neb. native Brianna McGhee in the 100-meter hurdles. Following her record-breaking performance on Saturday, McGhee battled through a slight headwind en route to a 13.14 finish and her first Big 12 gold medal.
“Any time you can win an event at this level, you’re happy,” director of track and field Darryl Anderson said.
No one competed more times in the finals than senior Sam Watts. Watts opened the day with a second-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay alongside junior Raymond Bozmans, junior Malik Summers and freshman Darrion Flowers. The quartet combined for a time of 39.41. Watts then went on to compete against fellow teammate Baker in the 100 meters. In just his second 100 meter performance this year, he took home sixth place at 10.54. Watts completed his extensive day in the 200 meters, where he earned silver behind a time of 20.69 (-0.8).
Sophomore Scotty Newton racked up more points for the men’s team with a third-place finish in the triple jump on Sunday with a distance of 51 feet, 5.75 inches (15.69 meters). In all, Newton produced 10 points for the Frogs throughout the weekend.
Junior Iphona Clemence-Paiment, sophomore Sabrina Moore, McGhee and freshman Kayla Heard clocked in at 45.06 in the 4×100-meter relay, placing fourth. Heard also placed in the 400 finals.
Overall, the men’s team recorded 49 points, while the women’s team totaled 19 points.
“We had some good performances. We want to get better, but now we put our attention toward getting as many people as possible through the regional meet, so that we can score some points and hopefully be well inside the top 20. That’s the objective at this point.”
Next up, the TCU track and field team will compete in Lawrence, Kan. at the NCAA West Regional Meet.
