FORT WORTH — Senior Brianna McGhee broke the 100-meter hurdles school record for the fourth time this season at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Fort Worth on Saturday.

The Omaha, Neb. native clocked in at 12.88 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in the NCAA this year. Throughout the outdoor season, McGhee has improved on the school record by .36 seconds.

“McGhee broke the school record in the hurdles again – which is getting to be an everyday thing,” said director of track and field Darryl Anderson.

Overall, TCU posted five final-qualifying times on Saturday.

Bowerman Watch List selection Ronnie Baker won the second heat of the 100-meter dash as he cruised to a wind-aided 10.17 finish. Baker will face off against Texas’ Senoj-Jay Givans and Oklahoma State’s John Teeters on Sunday, who hold the nation’s fourth and eighth-fastest 100 meter times this season, respectively. Since the outdoor opener, Baker has topped the NCAA’s list this season at 9.95.

Senior Sam Watts notched qualifying times in two events on Saturday – the 100 and 200 meters. In his first 100-meter dash of the season, Watts clocked in at 10.27 with the meet’s fourth-fastest effort. In the 200 meters, Watts led the pack in his heat, clocking in at 20.72.

To begin the day, senior Megan Smith put TCU on the board with a sixth-place finish in the shot put, recording a distance of 53 feet, 2.75 inches (16.22 meters).

Sophomore Scotty Newton secured a fifth-place finish as he logged a long jump mark of 24 feet, 10.5 inches (7.58 meters) on his fourth attempt.

“For the final events today, Megan Smith and Scotty Newton competed well. All in all, we’ll come back tomorrow and let the chips fall where they may.”

In the 400-meter dash prelims, freshman Kayla Heard won heat two with a final-qualifying time of 54.18.

The Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship will resume at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the women’s discus. Final running events are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the 4×100-meter relays.

“For the seniors to be in front of the home crowd at the Big 12 Championship, I know they’re enjoying it. Hopefully we’ll have a big crowd tomorrow, and they can showcase their talent and be appreciated.”
