Former TCU star quarterback and legendary high school football coach Chuck Curtis has chronicled his life story with the help of Brian Honea and TCU Press in “The Life of Chuck Curtis: From the Spread Formation to Spreading the Word.” The book can be found on Amazon.com.

Losing a legend is never easy.

These individuals seem to transcend the bounds of mortality, inspiring greatness wherever they go with a larger-than-life quality. If there’s one phrase most often used to describe Texas football legend Chuck Curtis, it’s just that: larger than life.

A star quarterback for the TCU Horned Frogs, iconic Texas high school football coach and beloved mentor and friend to countless admirers, Curtis left this world early Monday morning at a Weatherford care facility after battling a lengthy illness. He was 80 years old. Even still his influence looms large over North Texas and beyond.

Even in his old age, Curtis was a sight to behold. Chuck Curtis looked like Texas. His broad-brimmed cowboy hat capped a giant frame, shading a face that was always highlighted by an indomitable smile. A massive belt-buckle often adorned his waist, while one of many equally large rings were fixed on his right hand. …
