Today’s Pigskin: Trevone Boykin home run UDFA for Seahawks
Every year there are some major college football players that fall through the cracks of the draft and find a great home as an undrafted free agent. At the top of that list has to be quarterback Trevone Boykin, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks shortly after the completion of the 2016 NFL Draft.
While not quite at the same level as La’el Collins last season, who dropped due to a criminal investigation he was ultimately cleared of, Boykin’s decorated career at TCU may have fallen to the wayside after an incident that prevented him from participating in the team’s bowl game against Oregon.
Already deemed a system quarterback by many scouts, that one misstep in a San Antonio bar fight on New Year’s Eve made Boykin a far less attractive selection with his character (or at least his temperament) put in question. But throughout his time in Fort Worth, he was the team’s outright leader and stories like him making a deep connection with a young Iowa State fan suffering from cerebral palsy — subsequently raising $30,000 — wrongfully lost meaning.
Peel back that one night in San Antonio, there’s a player and person that looks an awful lot like Russell Wilson. Even coach Pete Carroll has noted their parallels. …
