Today’s U: TCU basketball’s process promotes patience and excitement

The last time the TCU basketball punched a ticket to the big dance, its incoming class of freshman this year weren’t even walking. That was in 1998 when the Horned Frogs peaked at No. 15 in the AP poll midseason and lost their first round matchup to a No. 12 seed.

But TCU isn’t just dealing with a matter of making it to the NCAA tournament, but finding success once there. Its last win in the tourney came in 1987 after riding a 15-year drought. The last and only time the team made two consecutive appearances was between 1952 and 1953.

Now moving on from Trent Johnson after just one AP top 25 appearance during four years in Fort Worth, the program brought Jamie Dixon from Pittsburgh in hopes for an immediate turnaround in the coaching chair.

Coming from a TCU background, playing for the team from 1983-87, Dixon is already a fan-favorite considering his purple blood. He’s joining good company of coaches returning to their undergrad homes. The likes of Jim Boeheim, Roy Williams, and Fred Hoiberg have all found considerable success for their teams. …
