GoFrogs: McGhee Breaks School Record With NCAA’s No. 2 Time

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Senior Brianna McGhee broke the school 100 meter hurdles record for the fourth-straight week at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. on Friday.
McGhee’s time of 12.95 was a .21 second improvement off her last performance. McGhee currently holds the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season.
“We were really pleased with Brianna’s performance today,” said director of track and field Darryl Anderson. “She earned an Olympic trials qualifying time, so that’s something to be pretty happy about.”
McGhee wasn’t the only Horned Frog breaking records, though. Junior Paola Miranda topped her previous school record in the weight throw with a mark of 195 feet, 10 inches (59.69m) en route to a first-place finish in the event.
In the men’s 200-meter dash, senior Ronnie Baker led the pack with an outdoor career-best time of 20.64. Senior Sam Watts followed in second place with a time of 20.68 in his first 200 meters of the season. Both Baker’s and Watts’ times qualify for regionals.
In the throws, junior Adam Damadzic placed second in the discus behind a distance of 182 feet, 3 inches (55.55m). Freshman Fellan McGuigan took care of things in the hammer as he earned silver with a mark of 206 feet, 6 inches. Senior Megan Smith placed first in the women’s shot put with a mark of 53 feet, 5.75 inches (16.30m), and sophomore Adam Hood moved to No. 9 on the all-time list with a shot put mark of 51 feet, 2.75 inches (15.61m).
The women’s 4×100 relay team of junior Iphona-Clemence Paiement, Sabrina Moore, McGhee and freshman Kayla Heard finished fifth with a regional qualifying time of 44.92. Moore also logged a season best in the 100 meters with a time of 11.66 and went on to win her section of the 200 meters at 24.24. Heard also finished the 400-meter race at 54.48.
“Kayla competed well in the 400. She has been consistent in the mid-to-low 44s, and she should have a breakthrough at some point.”
Freshman Lexi Aitken moved to No. 5 on the all-time list with a season-best and regional qualifying time of 59.88 in the 400 hurdles.
Sophomore Nicole Hicks won her section in the 1500 meters at 4:42.66.
“All in all, we had a pretty good day. This is definitely something to build on, and now it’s just a matter of regrouping, getting back to work and preparing ourselves for the Drake Relays and the conference meet.”
