FORT WORTH – A dominating performance on the mound from Brian Howard and a timely two-out hit from Connor Wanhanen helped TCU complete the sweep of Oklahoma with a 2-0 win Saturday.
The Rundown
Brian Howard (5-1) faced just one batter over the minimum in his seven innings on the mound. The junior allowed three hits, but a caught stealing and a double play erased two of the three base runners. He finished the game with four strikeouts.
Oklahoma’s Jake Elliott went toe-to-toe with Howard through four innings, but ran into trouble with two outs in the fifth. Josh Watsondumped a single into right to get the rally started. He was on the move when Dane Steinhagen lined a single through the vacated hole at second, putting runners on the corners. Connor Wanhanen blooped a single into right center to give the Frogs the 1-0 lead.
The Sooners first real threat in the game came in the eighth with two down. A wild pitch on a strikeout kept the inning alive. A base hit followed and a walk loaded the bases. The Frogs went to the bullpen and called on Durbin Feltman. The freshman won an eight-pitch battle with Cade Harris, striking him out to end the inning.
TCU finally got its insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. A two-out walk to Evan Skoug kept the inning alive. After Luken Baker was hit by the pitch, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. A passed ball allowed Skoug to race home for a 2-0 lead.
Oklahoma threatened in the ninth as it put two on with nobody out. Feltman got a ground ball to Elliott Barzilli, who started a big 5-4-3 double play. He then struck out Austin O’Brien looking to end the game to notch his second save of the season.
