GoFrogs: TCU Powers Past Kansas Sunday

FORT WORTH – An eight-run fifth inning propelled TCU to a 14-6 victory over Kansas on Sunday afternoon. The Horned Frogs had nine extra base hits, including three home runs, in locking up the series victory.

The Rundown
TCU found itself facing a 2-0 deficit after the first, but responded with a trio of runs in the second. Josh Watson opened the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch. Connor Wanhanen singled to pull the Frogs within one. A Ryan Merrill base hit tied the game at two and Cam Warner’s second hit of the day gave TCU a 3-2 lead.

Kansas battled back in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at three. An unearned run in the third helped the Jayhawks regain the lead, 4-3.

In the fifth, the first eight batters reached for TCU as it blew the game open. Elliott Barzilli opened the inning with a double. Two batters later the bases were loaded forDane Steinhagen, who jumped on the first pitch for a bases-clearing double and a 6-4 TCU lead. Ryan Merrill followed with his first career home run to double up the Jayhawks.

Back-to-back doubles from Austen Wade and Warner extended the lead to five, 9-4.Evan Skoug capped the scoring in the inning with a towering home run to right field for an 11-4 lead.

Kansas got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single from Joe Moroney to make it an 11-6 lead.

Josh Watson homered for the seventh time this year in the eighth and two errors in the ninth gifted the Frogs two more runs to account for the final score.

Brian Trieglaff (4-0) picked up the win in relief of Sean Wymer. Ryan Burnett turned in 3 1/3 scoreless innings and Durbin Feltman tossed a scoreless ninth.

 Cam Warner stretched his hitting streak to 20 games with a base hit in the first. It’s TCU’s 20 game hitting streak since Brance Rivera posted a 27-game streak in 2011.

With the win, TCU improves to 24-7 and 6-3 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs return home to open up a four-game homestand. First up is a Tuesday night meeting with Dallas Baptist. Game time is set for 6:30.
