Chicago Tribune: Carmel grad Alex Young ready to make pitch for Kane County Cougars

As the latest crop for the Kane County Cougars began to get settled in Tuesday at Geneva, one player didn’t need to make sure he was set up with a host family.

Left-handed pitcher Alex Young grew up in Hawthorn Woods and played at Carmel in Mundelein, so the approximately 70-mile round trip to stay with his family every day will be no bother.

“I just texted them and told them I was coming home,” Young said. “They’re pumped about it. It’s nice to sleep in your own bed. I’m excited to come here and get to live at home and be with my family for a little bit.”

The 6-foot-2 Young isn’t just the only local guy on this year’s Cougars roster. He’s also the highest-rated Diamondbacks prospect by both Baseball America (fourth) and MLB.com (fifth). He was taken by the Diamondbacks with the first pick of the second round last June out of TCU. …
