Jacksonville Final Stats | South Carolina Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas - Opening up competition at the Gamecock Invitational, the TCU beach volleyball team was able to secure a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville before dropping a 4-1 decision to host South Carolina on Saturday at Wheeler Beach in Columbia, S.C.

In the start of three straight weekends on the road, the Horned Frogs (7-4) opened the day by battling the Dolphins (5-7) to a close win, before going toe-to-toe with the Gamecocks (12-4) in the final match of the day.

The team of Molly Scheel and Ariah Palter were the only pair to go undefeated on day one of the competition, as the duo have now won three straight matches. Against Jacksonville, the duo had to battle to three sets to get the overall win as they took the opening set 21-12. The Dolphin pair of Olga Nushtayeva and Shelby Babowicz came back to take the next set, 21-18, before the TCU pair finished off the match, 15-11, in the final set.

Against South Carolina, Scheel and Palter were the only pair to snag a victory and they recorded win No. 8 this season in straight sets. Playing on court five for the first time this season, the duo were able to upend Erin Neuenfeldt and Lista Darby, 21-16, 21-17.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Erik Peterson
Opening Statement
“I think it was a nice day for us to go out and get out of our comfort zone and we have talked about that a lot with the team. We had a chance to play some established programs today with Jacksonville playing in the Atlantic Sun Conference and they have been competing year in and year out for the past four years for a bid to go to the national championship. We also went against South Carolina who has been in the SEC for a while and they have also established themselves in the southeast as one of those programs that is really going above and beyond to take beach volleyball to the next step.

“We competed well against two teams that have a little bit more experience and that was one of the things we were really looking forward to going into this weekend. We have played a lot of other first-year programs like ourselves and we have also played some top-5 programs so it was nice to see a little bit more of a level playing field and the girls responded really well at times. I also think we saw some things that we can identify and work on to get better.”
