GoFrogs: Baseball Bounces Back With 9-5 Victory

Final Stats

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 TCU bounced back with a 9-5 victory over Texas on Saturday. TCU scored four unanswered runs in the final four innings to improve to 18-5 on the year.

The Rundown
TCU and Texas battled back and fourth through the first five innings. TCU would take the lead only to see the Longhorns rally back, but it was the Frogs that scored last as they tallied four unanswered runs to earn the win.

The Frogs took the early 1-0 lead on a Dane Steinhagen sacrifice fly, but Texas rebounded with a three-run second to open up a 3-1 lead.

TCU responded with a two-spot in the top of the third to tie the game at three. Cam Warner doubled with one out and came around to score on a Luken Baker base hit up the middle. A base hit by Elliott Barzilli loaded the bases and Evan Skoug was able to tie the game on a Josh Watson sacrifice fly.

A lead-off walk to Steinhagen in the fourth proved costly to Texas as he came around to score on Warner’s one-out single, putting the Frogs on top, 4-3. An unearned run in the fifth pushed TCU’s lead to two, 5-3.

Tres Barrera’s two-run home run in the fifth tied the game at five, but again, the Frogs had an answer the following inning.

Mason Hesse doubled to open the frame and scored on an Austen Wade base hit. After intentionally walking Skoug, Baker lined a single into right to drive in Wade. Another intentional walk loaded the bases and Skoug scored on a Watson ground out to make it an 8-5 game. TCU tacked on an unearned run in the top of the ninth to account for the final score.

The trio of Ryan Burnett (1-0), Preston Guillory and Durbin Feltman shut down the Longhorn offense for the final five innings to lock up TCU’s victory.

Stat of the Game
9 –
TCU drew nine walks in the game, including two intentional walks. Evan Skoug had four of the nine walks.

Quote of the Game
Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle

“Today shows the resiliency of our team. Yesterday was a good game, but the first game, we didn’t feel very good about the way we played. To get down 3-1, there were a lot of opportunities to give in. (Ryan) Burnett pitched well enough to slow them down a bit. Obviously, we swung the bats better today.”
