Cincinnati Enquirer: Brandon Finnegan happy to get chance to start

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – When left-hander Brandon Finnegan talks about the trade that sent him to the Cincinnati Reds last summer – a move that gives him his first real chance to prove he can be a starter – his choice of words is a bit ironic.

“It was a bit of a relief, definitely,” Finnegan said.

Until this spring, Finnegan’s never really had a chance to develop. The southpaw was a starter in college at Texas Christian University, and that’s how most projected him when the Kansas City Royals drafted him 17th overall in 2014.

But the Royals needed relief help as they chased their first World Series appearance since 1985, and called on Finnegan to toss important innings throughout the playoffs. That season, he famously became the first pitcher to play in both the College World Series and the professional version in the same year. …
