DMN: Carter High student, taken in by teacher after mom’s death, among 6 surprised with full TCU scholarships

Four months ago, Charity Mason’s life was turned upside down. Her mother died of cancer. And she was faced with leaving Carter High School and Dallas, her hometown, only months shy of graduation to go live with relatives.

But staff members at her school swooped in and took the 18-year-old under their wings. Teacher Lara Cardinale let the teen move in with her family. Counselor Melissa Pace was there for her through bad days and to keep her focused on college.

It all paid off — and in a big way.

Charity was among six students at Carter who were surprised at an assembly Thursday with full scholarships to Texas Christian University. The amount of each scholarship is $250,000. That’s $1.5 million for the group. …
