DMN: Why Jamie Dixon’s first season at TCU may not be a success on paper

On Tuesday we looked at the reasons to be optimistic about TCU in 2016-17 and the reasons are valid: The hiring of Jamie Dixon, a young core and an exciting incoming freshman.

But all that might not be enough for the Horned Frogs to make the jump next season. Here are three reasons to be pessimistic about TCU’s chances in 2016-17.

1. Big 12 competition. Of all the conferences to break through in, the Big 12 may very well be the hardest. The 10-team conference sent seven teams to the NCAA tournament this season. Kansas and West Virginia are perennial powerhouses, Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma are consistently good and Texas and Texas Tech are both on the come up. Add in the fact that Oklahoma State hired Stephen F. Austin’s Brad Underwood as its new head coach, the Big 12 looks like it could be even tougher next season. This means Dixon will have no room for error in his first season in Fort Worth because once conference play starts TCU will have no games off. That will be a big challenge for the young roster and new head coach. …
