Notes on a Scorecard

HE DID IT AGAIN!

Ronnie Baker! Congratulations to this outstanding young man in our track and field program on repeating as NCAA champion in the indoor 60 meters! Ronnie ran a 6.47 to set TCU and NCAA meet records while ranking as the third-fastest time in NCAA history.

Since 2012, our track and field program has produced seven NCAA champions. We now have a total of 14 individual and seven relay national titles in our history.

TOP PERFORMANCES
We’re incredibly proud of our rifle program as we finished second at the NCAA Championships. Over the last eight years, we have won two national titles while placing second on three occasions. Individually this year, Mindy Miles was second in air rifle.

Please take note of Mindy. She defines the Horned Frog Factor. Rifle is a sport in which the honor system is in place. Entering the final relay in smallbore, we held an eight-point advantage over eventual national champion West Virginia. Mindy was in position to win the individual national championship and give us the team smallbore title as well. She then had a rifle malfunction. She self-reported the misfire during her first string of shots. After taking a zero because of that, she then fired 11 10s in her last 12 shots to finish with a 580.

We’re incredibly proud of Mindy for her integrity. It’s an important value stressed in our program by head coach Karen Monez. We had a similar occurrence of a self-report by Erin Lorenzen at the 2010 NCAA Championships, when we won the first of our two national titles.

In addition to Mindy and Ronnie, we also had an impressive effort by women’s golfer Brooke Graebe. The freshman from Yorba Linda, Calif., was the medalist at the Notre Dame Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz. She shot a 6-under-par 210 to lead us to a second-place finish out of 17 teams.

BASKETBALL
As you know, we are in the midst of a search for a new men’s basketball coach. This was a very gut-wrenching decision. Trent Johnsonis a man of unbelievable integrity. It’s hard to find a better person than Trent, and I have the highest level of respect for him. However, we believe change was needed in the leadership of our men’s basketball program. With our new facility and playing in the Big 12, the strongest basketball conference in the country, we’re positioned well to have a men’s basketball program that makes TCU and Fort Worth proud. Trent inherited a very difficult situation, and we truly appreciated his efforts over the last four years. We simply did not have the success we envisioned but believe the pieces are now in place for us to move forward.

TICKET PRICES FOR ROAD FOOTBALL GAMES
We’ve received the ticket prices for four of our five road football games this season: Sept. 24 SMU ($60); Oct. 22 West Virginia ($65); Nov. 5 Baylor ($125); and Nov. 25 Texas ($90). The Oct. 8 game at Kansas is still TBA.

ROCK YOUR COLORS

As part of a national Rock Your Colors campaign, we’ve worked with Original Retro Brand to develop a new collection of co-branded T-shirts featuring former baseball players who are currently playing in the Major Leagues. More players will be added, but our original lineup includes 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta, two-time NL All-Star Matt Carpenter, Andrew Cashner andBrandon Finnegan.

To help promote this new product, we’re running a “surprise and delight” campaign on social media. We selected 28 random fans on Twitter who received a gift pack featuring a player T-shirt, TCU baseball hat and autographed baseball. CLICK HERE to see all our TCU baseball apparel.

FROGVISION
We hope you’ve been enjoying our improved stream of baseball games through FrogVision. If haven’t seen it yet, it’s the equivalent of a television production. CLICK HERE to see available games. By contract, through TV partner FOX, the video stream is only available on non-televised games. If the game is on TV, the schedule only indicates the “Listen” option.

HISTORY TO BE MADE
Our historic first home beach volleyball matches are this weekend with our “Fight at the Fort” tournament. On Saturday, we host Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 9 a.m. and Florida State at 2 p.m. We then face Houston Baptist Sunday at 11 a.m.

Admission is free for all matches. We’ll have a food truck and beach-themed concession options available as well as a DJ providing music. Our Student Frog Club will have beach chairs for students to sit in during the matches.

ON THE DOCKET
In addition to the beach volleyball tournament mentioned above, there’s no shortage of entertainment options when it comes to athletics events on campus over the next few days.

Women’s basketball, baseball, track and field and men’s tennis are home. Women’s basketball hosts UTRGV, previously UTPA, in the WNIT opening round Thursday at 7 p.m. We also begin Big 12 play in baseball with a three-game home series versus West Virginia. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m.

Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The TCU Invitational takes place at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex Thursday and Friday. The high school division is Saturday. Men’s tennis hosts Columbia Saturday at noon and Dartmouth Sunday at 1 p.m.

Women’s tennis is at Texas Tech Saturday, while men’s golf begins play Sunday at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE

Last Week’s Answer: My friend and TCU men’s soccer letterman Jim Brierton provided the following quote, “Gentlemen, let’s spike the punch!” It was from the 1980 movie “Hollywood Knights” with Robert Wuhl starring as Newbomb Turk.

This Week’s Question: “Thank you very little.”

COMPLIANCE CORNER

Due to the inclement weather, the Ocean State University baseball team was not able to begin its home game until 9:30 p.m. If the match is still being contested at midnight, is it permissible to continue or do they have to wait and resume the next day after 5 a.m.?

The teams may continue the game. NCAA Bylaw 17.1.7.6.3.1 states that countable athletically related activities may occur between midnight and 5 a.m. under the following circumstances (Adopted: 1/16/10):

(a.) During participation in a conference championship or an NCAA championship;
(b.) Participation in any competition that begins before midnight and concludes after midnight; or
(c.) Participation in a promotional practice activity (e.g., first practice of the season).
