TCU Tops UT Arlington, 5-1

Final Stats

FORT WORTH – No. 7 TCU ran its winning streak to three games with a 5-1 victory over UT Arlington Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium.

The Rundown
Dalton Horton (2-0) found himself facing a bases loaded with nobody out jam in the first, but allowed just one run after getting a double play ball and a line out to end the frame.

TCU wasted little time taking the lead as it took advantage of walks to Connor Wanhanen and Evan Skoug in the first. Luken Baker doubled to left field, bringing home both runners for a 2-1 lead.

The Frogs’ lead grew to three, 4-1, with another two run inning in the fourth. Josh Watson was hit by a pitch to open the frame. He moved to third on an Elliott Barzilli hit and scored on a double from Ryan Merrill. Dane Steinhagen grounded out to drive in Barzilli with the fourth run of the game.

The combination of Horton, Jared Janczak, Durbin Feltman and Brian Trieglaff limited UTA to just six hits in the game. The Mavericks had more than one base runner in an inning after the first just once.

TCU’s final run of the game came courtesy of Steinhagen as he grounded out to drive in Baker to account for the final score.

Stat of the Game
23 1/3 –
The TCU pitching staff has not allowed an earned run in their last 23 1/3 innings pitched dating back to the 4th inning against Gonzaga on Saturday.

Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle

“I was really pleased with Dalton (Horton). That’s one of the better offensive UTA teams I’ve seen in my 13 years here. They hit a lot of balls hard, so we were really fortunate tonight to have a lot of balls go right at us.”

“Obviously, a big key in the game for us was bases loaded and nobody out for them in the first inning with a really good hitter up. Dalton threw a first-pitch change up and got him to hit a groundball. That really helped us because the game could have gotten out of hand in a hurry.”

“I told the team before the game that UTA has a really good club. They’ve already beaten Oklahoma State and Baylor and had won five out of six. This is a really good win for us.”

Notes
• The pitching staff didn’t surrender an earned run for the sixth time this season.
• Luken Baker tallied his fourth multi-hit game and his sixth multiple-RBI contest of the season.
• Dane Steinhagen notched his fifth multiple-RBI game of the year and the 12th of his career.
• Luken Baker and Elliott Barzilli have reached base in all 12 games this season.
• Elliott Barzilli, Ryan Merrill and Connor Wanhanen stretched their hitting streaks to five games.
