TCU Comes Up Short Against No. 19 Baylor

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU cut it to two midway through the second half Saturday, but No. 19 Baylor was able to escape Schollmaier Arena with an 86-71 victory.
The Rundown
The Horned Frogs (11-18; 2-14 Big 12 Conference) went on a 9-2 run around the 10-minute mark and appeared ready to take down the nations No. 19 ranked team at home Saturday, but the Bears responded with a run of their own to close the door on the Frogs upset bid in a game that could have gone either way midway through the second half.
On the night, Malique Trent tallied a career-high 25 points on 6-of-13 from the field. The sophomore also went 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. Chauncey Collinsfollowed by scoring 17 points and dishing out a career-high five assists in the loss. Collins also grabbed four rebounds on the night.
Baylor (21-8; 10-6 Big 12 Conference) saw both Johnathan Motley and Taurean Prince tally 22 points apiece, respectively.
TCU shot 40.4 percent from the field Saturday, including 53.3 percent from behind the arc. The Horned Frogs also forced Baylor into 17 turnovers, while totaling a 27-19 advantage in points off turnovers.
Trent would make it an eight-point game at the 17:04 mark, scoring five-straight, including an old fashioned three-point play. By the time Collins connected from deep at the 15:28 mark, TCU had climbed within 46-42 off a 9-0 run.
Baylor responded, but the Horned Frogs kept battling, pulling within 55-49 off a three from JD Miller at the 11-minute mark. The Frogs continued to pressure the Bears a few plays later, making it a 57-55 ballgame at the charity stripe with a little over 9 minutes left in the contest.
Baylor proceeded to go on an 11-2 run, which was halted by Trent who took over the game down the stretch as the sophomore scored seven-straight on the offensive end to pull TCU within 68-62 at the 6:15 mark. That was as close as the Frogs would get the rest of the way.
Baylor jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the contest, but Trent would have nothing of it, tickling the twine from deep 4 minutes into the ballgame. On the very next possession Collins got into the act from behind the arc, drilling a triple to make it an 11-6 game at the 16:42 mark.
By the time Vladimir Brodziansky found the bottom of the net from behind the arc, TCU had climbed within 15-9. The two teams traded possessions the next couple of trips and the Frogs would make it an 18-15 contest within a blink of an eye off a jumper from Karviar Shepherd with 13:26 on the clock.
With Baylor clinging to a 23-17 advantage, Collins went back to work from long distance, scoring another triple to make it a three-point contest. The sophomore would score on the next trip down the court off a pull-back jumper and the Purple and White had made it a 25-22 contest with 8:36 left in the half.
The Bears would go on a 14-3 run over the next couple of minutes to take a 39-25 lead, but Lyrik Shreiner would knock down a three from the corner to put a halt to the run at the 3:08 mark. Baylor was able to take a 42-31 lead into intermission.
