The Examiner: Four run fifth dooms University of Louisiana-Lafayette to a 7-1 loss against TCU

For the second time in as many days, the fifth inning turned out to be the undoing of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (ULL) as TCU cruised to a 7-1 win in the second game of the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. Just as on Wednesday night, the Ragin Cajuns surrendered a four run fifth inning that broke up a pitching duel between TCU starter Brian Howard and ULL’s Gunner Leger. Back to back doubles from Luken Baker and Josh Watson produced three of the four runs that handed sixth ranked ULL it’s second loss of the season.

The Rajin Cajuns broke on top first. With one out in the third, lead-off hitter Joe Robbins tripled into the left center-field gap and scored on a bunt single by Conrad Brenn but that was all ULL could manage. The team from Lafayette, Louisiana managed just two more hits the rest of the way and five for the game.

Dane Steinhagen singled to lead off the bottom of the inning and scored the tying run on a ground out from Cam Warner. Steinhagen would later hit a two run shot in the bottom of the eighth to round out the scoring for TCU. In between the Horned Frogs erupted four hits and four runs in the fifth, Steinhagen lead ff with a double and scored on a Connor Wanhanen one out single to give TCU the lead for good. Two batters later Evan Skoug reached on an error before Baker and Watson deliver the big blows of the night.

Meanwhile Howard was hurling five hit, one run baseball over six and two-thirds against ULL. …
